Different Sensors used  in Mobile Phones | Their Use | Explained
There are many sensors that are used in your mobile phones, let’s know about them one-by-one.
Mobile phone sensors

1.) Accelerometer:-
It tells your mobiles software that how you are holding your phone (Eg. Horizontally or vertically) or how it is placed.
·       For example the option of “auto rotate” in your phone that you can enable in phones setting. When you are viewing photos or browsing on internet then if you hold your phone in vertical position then the screen turns into vertical mode and if you hold your phone in horizontal position then it turns into landscape mode.

·        For example in some phones when you receive a call and if you putt your phones screen downwards then your phone goes into silent mode or power saving mode.
All these works are done with the help of accelerometer sensor.
2.) Gyroscope or Gyro Sensor:-
A gyroscope is a type of accelerometer but it is a very advance accelerometer. With the help of Gyroscope your phones software get very minute information like at which angle, at which degree you have holed your phone or how much bowed or raised your phone is. It is used in various software like
·       While making 360° photo, when you click various photos at different angles then your camera knows the angle of every photo and with that information software joins them according to their angles and makes a 360° photo.

·       Gyroscope is used in various games, those games contain gyroscopic control for example when you tilt your phone in different directions it performs different tasks.
·       You can use gyro-sensor for viewing 360° videos.
  
3.) Magnetometer:-
It acts as a compass in your phone; if your phone does not have magnetometer then you can’t view directions (north, south, east, and west) in google maps or any other app.
·       It helps to find directions, it acts as a compass.
·       It can act as a metal detector because it is a magnet. When you bring metal object near your phone then the output rating changes and any app is able to predict any metal near your phone.

4.) Proximity Sensor:-
You can see proximity sensor at outer side of your phone, it can be found near front camera or near earpiece. It detects the distance between you and your phone. When you are taking a call then your phones screen get off; it saves battery and it prevent the touch with your face, so any mislead can’t happen.

It works by sending an infrared light and found any object on the basis of the amount of infrared light received.

5.) Light Sensor:-
It could be found near the proximity sensor. It is used to adjust the screen brightness automatically. Light sensor gives output to your phones software by detecting the amount of light in the surrounding environment and then the phones software adjust the brightness according to the output given by the light sensor.
·       If you are in a dark room then it will decrease the screen brightness and if you are outside in a bright area then it will increase the phones brightness.

6.) Barometer:-
It is found in some phones. Barometer measures the atmospheric pressure. With the help of this sensor you can get your height from the sea level.
·       It helps in GPS, If you phone have GPS then it makes your location more accurate.
·       It helps in some health related apps like how much height you have ascended.

7.)Finger Print Sensor:-
Basically it is used for security purpose, It enables you to lock-unlock your phone using your finger print.

8.) Thermometer:-
Some phones have thermometer sensor, all phones have internal thermometer sensor which measures temperature of battery, processor, etc. But some phones have external thermometer sensor with that you can note external temperature.

9.) Air Humidity Sensor:-
It measures the amount of humidity in your surroundings. It can predict humidity conditions favorable or unfavorable for you where the phone is present.

10.)                    Pedometer:-
Pedometer is an advanced version of Accelerometer. It tells about the number of number of steps that you  have walked.

There are some other mobile Phone Sensors like Air Humidity Sensor, Radiation Sensor, etc. but these sensors come in very limited smartphones.
Sensors are very useful and necessary components of mobile phones due to their capacity of performing a variety of tasks.
